How to Find a Reliable Plumber in Dublin: A Local's Checklist
Updated 11 June 2026 · DublinPlumbing
Every Dubliner has heard a plumber horror story — the quote that tripled on site, the 'repair' that failed within a month, the trader who vanished once the deposit cleared. The frustrating part is that avoiding all of it takes about ten minutes of checking. Here's the checklist we'd give a friend, even knowing they might not call us.
For gas work, RGI registration is the law
Start here, because it's not optional: in Ireland, only a Registered Gas Installer may legally work on a gas boiler, cooker or any gas appliance. It exists because unqualified gas work kills — carbon monoxide doesn't announce itself.
Checking takes a minute: search the installer on rgi.ie, and expect the engineer to show their RGI ID card at the door. Be precise about wording too — a trustworthy firm says 'RGI-registered'. Anyone claiming to be 'RGII-approved' or 'recommended by the regulator' is misusing terms; the register doesn't endorse anyone. (Our engineers are RGI-registered and carry ID — and we'd encourage you to check.)
Insurance and a guarantee in writing
A professional plumber carries public liability insurance — it protects your home if something goes wrong on the job. Asking for proof isn't rude; anyone offended by the question has answered it.
Equally important is what happens after the van leaves. A reliable firm puts a guarantee on its work in writing (12 months is a solid standard) and answers the phone when you invoke it. A guarantee that exists only verbally tends to expire the moment it's needed.
Read reviews like a local
Star ratings alone are easy to inflate. The signal is in the detail: reviews that name actual neighbourhoods and jobs — 'burst pipe in Drumcondra at 11pm', 'cistern replaced in Clontarf' — read like real customers because they usually are. Look for patterns across many reviews (punctuality, tidiness, prices matching quotes) rather than one glowing or furious outlier.
Check how the firm responds to criticism, too. Every busy trade picks up the odd bad review; a calm, specific reply tells you more about how they'll treat you than ten five-star ratings.
Get the price before the van arrives
The single best predictor of a good experience is a firm that talks money upfront. Before booking, you should know: whether there's a call-out fee (in Dublin they range €40–€95 — some firms, including our team, charge none), the hourly rate or fixed price, whether materials are included, and whether evenings or weekends cost more.
Then get the actual quote — written or texted — once they've seen the job, before work starts. 'We'll sort the price after' is how €150 jobs become €600 ones.
Red flags: walk away when you see these
Cash only and no paperwork. No physical address or landline. A price that jumps sharply once they're standing in your kitchen. Pressure to decide immediately — 'I can only do this price today'. Asking for a large deposit before any materials are ordered. A van and phone number but no checkable name behind them.
None of these guarantees a cowboy — but together they're how people get burned. A reliable plumber in Dublin is verifiable, insured, upfront on price and happy to be checked. Hold every firm to that standard, including us: call 01 524 0871 and judge for yourself.
